Since Alan mentioned that the coins and the floor looked too flat and too much of a rush job, he showed me how to create floors for the scene using substances. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any that would match the theme of my set. Additionally, many of them looked very low-res even with the resolution pushed up to maximum. I instead decided to create a second iteration of my floor, this time actually modelling it instead of using a simple, flat plane with a texture. I also recreated the coins with more geometry.
attention to detail IS everything, Tom - going back can be painful, but it's worth it - those coins look very tangible now :)
