(@Alan) Adaptation: Maya Rigging Troubles

I seem to be having some trouble with rigging my character's legs. I've followed the tutorial on the CG Arts Tutorials blog by the book (or video, even), but when I try to rotate the joints to test out to see if the rig is working, they won't rotate. It's like they've been locked into position somehow. Is the Uni open during the Easter holidays? I was just wondering if it'd be possible to go in and get some realtime help with this, that is if you or any other Maya-savvy person is in.

I'm thinking this may be an issue with grouping, so I've posted my current Outliner setup.

I'm afraid to start rigging another part of the character and leaving the legs until after the holidays, because I don't want to find out that I've completely messed the rig up and have to start all over again.

  1. Hey Tom! It looks to me like you have put an IK on that leg, which means the knee won't rotate, which is perfectly normal. You will get to see the leg movement later, once you add the foot control to it (which will move the whole leg.

    1. What about the hip, the ankle, foot and toe joints? None of them move either. Also, when I move the heel of the foot up and down, all it does is move the entire leg mesh around from the hip. It doesn't move any other joints. It's like he's stiffened his leg up.

Is this all dependent on the foot control? Once I add that in, it'll all move perfectly fine?

  3. I think Andi's right here, it won't work properly until you have the foot controls set up. All the foot movement will be set up on the controls plus the leg movement.
