After many hours of non-stop, grueling work, I've finally managed to complete all of his textures. Some of them turned out better than expected, others not so much, specifically the flat fur texturing. It doesn't look as good to me as realistic fur would using maya fur (comparing this model to stuff like Pixar's furry characters), but I guess I've just been staring at textures for too long and become overly critical of my own work. Please give feedback!

This looks great, how does he look rendered? :)
ReplyDeleteHey Thomas, some nice progress with this character. My only concern (based on these view-port screens) is to be careful when faking the tufts of fur with the geometry. In this case, it is starting to look pinched and very CG, especially around the knees and the end-of-tail. This may look more desirable in test renders? Remove thoughts of emulating Pixar-esque quality fur-renders for the moment... There are other ways to alternate creating the fur. In this case, I think the minimalist-fur and stylised-clumping is boosting your character design, as opposed to cultivating ways to bring in realistic fur.
ReplyDeleteI think Dayle's right, Pixar-esque fur would make him look cuddly and more childish, whereas the smooth style you have looks marbled and individual, and a bit slicker than "furry fur".
ReplyDeleteI can see him as a Mcdonalds toy already!
